Choosing a birth team is about more than "we just clicked."

I have news for you...any one who works directly with clients is going to be "so nice" or they would never get paid. I have never met a midwife or doula who wasn't sweet during interviews and who doesn't LOVE what they do ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But NICE isn't good enough & what if you need them to use their voice for you when you can't? SWEET isn't going to help in an emergency CLICKING with your provider is great and all buuuut... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -Are they skilled in the type of birth YOU desire? Ask for their statistics on cesareans, episotomies, VBAC, transfer, instrumental birth, etc.

-Are their habitual practices in alignment with your birth plan? (because when things happen fast, HABITS > BIRTH PLANS)

-What are their limits and professional boundaries that might result in transfer of care, at what point do they initiate transfer and what tools might they use in the process?

-What do previous clients and colleagues have to say about their experiences? (Careful here. Not everyone has the same priorities as you so take it with a grain of salt but LISTEN carefully anyway) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You need to ask yourself what having an amazing birth means to YOU.

You need research your options, decide who the best provider is for you, your baby and your family. You need to be informed about your birth choices and confident you can achieve your birth goals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You need to find a team to support you, a group of cheerleaders, of safety-keepers, of birth professionals ready and willing to hold space for you in your most vulnerable moments. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The sooner you have your team behind you, the more empowered you will feel during your pregnancy and going into labor prepared and ready to put in the hard, beautiful work of bringing your baby earthside. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have the questions for you if you need them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will be there to hold your hand every step of the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will teach you how. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I can give you the tools you need for any birthing situation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But YOU have to decide what answers you are looking for in the providers and support people that are right for you.
